Prevalence is particularly useful for understanding the overall burden of chronic diseases, planning healthcare services, and allocating resources, as it reflects both new cases and those who have survived with the condition. Incidence, in contrast, measures the rate at which new cases of a disease occur in a population over a specific time period among those initially free of the disease. It can be expressed as either incidence proportion (cumulative incidence), which represents the risk of developing the disease during a defined period, or incidence rate (incidence density), which accounts for varying periods of observation and is expressed as cases per person-time.
