The Ivory Laws are very strict now. If you search my videos, you’ll find several videos explaining what you can and can’t do with any ivory items you own, including pieces made with even the ti jest amount of ivory (furniture decoration like stringing, escutcheons, handles on tea pots, finials etc) The Sperm Whale teeth are known as Tabua in Fiji. These are highly important cultural items and have been for thousands of years. They’re given as wedding gifts, good luck charms and as a way of saying a very big thank you! Their value has always been great in the islands, so much so, as much as gold at times. They are believed to have supernatural powers and bring good luck to whom ever owns one. Tabua’s were and still are in some parts used as currency, they’re collected, venerated and though of as long term investments The Sperm Whale teeth were generally collected from dead whales when they washed up on shore. This of course was a very rare occurrence, so the Tabua have always been incredibly rare This particular Sperm Whale tooth I can date to at least the late 19th century as it was gifted to my clients grandfather when he was a seaman working onboard a ship that found ot self in the Fijian Islands. After a terrible storm, the crew onboard volunteer to help rebuild a villages damaged properties. This took a week or two and as a way of saying thank you, my clients grandfather was gifted this Tabua. I, in turn was gifted the tooth around 2) years ago after I’d sold the contents of a country house for my client. I could have sold it at the time, but I felt that it’s importance was so great becomes of ots story, the cultural significance to the Fijians, plus of course that the Sperm Whale tooth had been gifted to me. Today, it’s impossible to sell this Tabua, as they now come under the general ivory laws which ban the sale, import or export of these teeth. So, now an item that was once worth its weight in gold, is now financially speaking worthless. I was never going to sell the Tabua anyway, so the new ivory laws don’t effect this particular tooth, but do be aware of the new rules and laws if you own such a thing Here’s a link to my ivory laws video • ANTIQUE IVORY BAN. NEW LAW / WARNING! And a link to a video explaining how to tell the difference between ivory and bone • Is it Ivory or Bone?
