The OPC UA Foundation hosted their annual OPC UA Day event (virtual), the week of April 25 to the 29th with three hours of presentations each day. John’s top takeaways: 1. OPC UA is still, without a doubt, the dominate technology for moving factory floor data into the Enterprise and the Cloud. 2. The Foundation main point is that costly integrations in every kind of industry can be dramatically lowered by using OPC UA technology and leveraging standardized data modeling. 3. Cloud data ingestion using OPC UA and information modeling is now supported by all six major Cloud vendors: MS Azure, IBM, AWS, Google Cloud, Mindsphere (Siemens) and SAP. 4. The OPC UA Foundation continues to grow and now has 866 member organizations. The focus of the organization is now to move manufacturers away from communication protocols. The plan is to use OPC UA information exchange with standardized information models developed by domain experts to move data. 5. The move to standard information exchange at the field level is now part of the OPC UA FX effort and it includes both Factory Automation & Process Automation. The OPC UA FX effort is working on Controller to Controller (C2C), Controller to Device (C2D) and Device to Device (D2D) communications. The C2C specification is released, and work is starting on D2D. This includes moving all the field initiatives including TSN, OPC Safety (Profisafe), PubSub and MQTT into the OPC UA FX effort to have one harmonized solution for process and factory from field to the cloud. 6. BSI Germany, the German Federal Security Office did a study and reported that 70% of OPC UA devices are at Revision level 1.04 or earlier and that these vendors have little to no interest in upgrading. 7. PubSub is now fully integrated with MQTT. Information Models are embedded in OPC UA and transported to an MQTT broker using PubSub. The “war” between MQTT is over. It can be postulated that OPC UA “won” by absorbing MQTT into its specification. Even though the technologies are now compatible, the Microsoft presentation went to some length to disparage MQTT and especially the Sparkplug B effort.
