We have all felt that carpet we fell in love with and can't believe how cloudlike it feels. How did they do it? What type of carpet is it? The secret today is not the type of carpet, but the pad that is under it. Don't get me wrong. Picking the right type of carpet is important, but if you only focus on the carpet you are going to be disappointed. Watch as we explain the following types of Carpet Pad: Standard Rebond Foam Rebonded Memory Foam True Manufactured Memory Foam Standard Rebond Foam: This is what is under most carpets. The official name is Rebond Urethane Foam. This pad is made out of chunks of foam that have been pushed and glued together. This foam is recycled foam that was left over from upholstery manufactures. This type of pad comes in two different densities. (6lbs and 8lbs) along with two widths (3/8 inch and 1/2 inch) Most companies will start you our with a 3/8inch and 6lbs due to it being the most inexpensive. This size has some draw backs even though it is the most inexpensive. At first it feels very soft due to the fact that it is pretty squishy right from the beginning, but because it is not as dense it breaks down quicker and after a few thousand steps this pad ends up feeling like there is not pad at all. We recommend at minimum you should start with an 8lb pad and 1/2 inch thickness. This pad will simply last you longer and feel better for a much longer time period. Price difference is very minimal. One of the biggest drawbacks to standard pads are there is no protection or moisture barrier built into it. With time dirt and grime end up absorbing into the pad causing it to breakdown and flatten. Not only does this decrease the softness feeling, but smells and other odors can build up and can not be removed out of the carpet even after a carpet cleaning. The next step up in carpet pad options is re-bonded Memory Foam that includes a spill guard. A spill guard is the thin plastic sheet that covers one side of the memory foam pad. it works not only as a liquid barrier but also an odor blocker. Upgrading to a memory foam will help the pad last longer and spring back faster after being compressed. Even with these extra features you have even better options to get that true super soft cloud like feeling you are looking for. To truly get that feeling you are wanting you need to get the upgraded pad that is a 100% manufactured foam pad. This is not re-bonded but made specifically for a carpet pad. This pad has a odor blocker and guard on both sides. This prevents moisture coming up from the subfloor or coming though the carpet. It is actually the only pad in the industry that will outlast your carpet.
