No? Let me tell you ! ▶ A person who wants to import goods into India must have a Legal Metrology Packaged Commodity (LMPC) certificate. An LMPC certificate is an import requirement under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules, 2011. The Act governs trade in goods that are sold or distributed by weight, measure, or number. By defining strict rules and regulations, including for pre-packaged goods, the Act seeks to promote fair trade practices and protect consumer rights. ▶ I’ll tell you the importance of LMPC Certificate by giving an example, there are different types of goods when we go to buy in the market. One is either sold loose, or the other is pre-packed. The loose goods, for example, fruits, vegetables, rice, flour and etc, are weighed in front of us. ▶ So, we know the quality of these goods. But talking about the pre-packed goods, we don’t know whether the goods are fresh or safe or also the weight of the product. The Legal Metrology Act arms the customer with the information required (weight, quantity, price, expiry date, etc) to make a clear buying decision. So you can imagine how important this certificate is. How to Apply and What it Costs 👉🏽 Let's Discuss about Model Approval : ▶ The approval which is given by the Department of Consumer Affairs is required to obtain the model approval of any weight or measure. It’s necessary for the manufacturers/ Importers to obtain the model approval before any sale or any distribution of a weighing and measuring instrument. The reason behind the approval is that different model has different specifications that need to be tested and approved, under the Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011 both for the mechanical and digital model. ▶ Pertaining to the detailed report submitted by the referral laboratory, the Central Legal Metrology Department may grant approval to the respective instrument/device models. Upon approval, the model of the instrument is assigned a unique code.
