I was asked in a recent video where I shared one of my original silk dresses about how I determine the fiber of an original dress. Some are easy-plain silk is usually very easy to tell by feel. Some are more difficult-19th century wool is notorious for being misidentified (even by long time experienced seamstresses) as cotton. The best method of determining fiber content is a bleach or burn test but obviously there are ethical issues about using those methods on antique garments. That’s where microscopes come in. This is something I have only been doing for a few years and I am self taught and am using a cheap microscope that doesn’t really get to the super microscopic views that would be best. But we can learn how fibers behave from a fairly cheap (less than $50) microscope to hopefully allow us to glean information about original garments.
