In this video, we take a look at the Convair XB-53, an American jet bomber from the Korean War era. We first talk about the origins of the project in late World War II, with the American military wanting to maintain the advantage over Germany by building a jet bomber. We talk about the small lie that got the project approved, and the designs that Convair, Boeing, North American, and Martin submitted in the XB-46, XB-47, XB-45, and XB-48, respectively. We talk about a parallel project by Convair in the XA-44 that drew influence from the Junkers Ju 287. We then talk about the significant interest the XA-44 received, how it was moved into the jet bomber competition, and how the XB-46 project was crippled in favor of it. We talk about the projected performance of the XA-44, renamed to the XB-53, how it may have been better than the other designs, and how it amounted to absolutely nothing. We talk about how the XB-46 project fizzled out as well, and we end on how Convair dividing their resources and attention proved to be a huge detriment.
