Tangkhul Nagas in 1939: A Rare Historical Look Through Ursula Graham Bower's Lens

Ursula Graham Bower abandoned her anthropology studies at Oxford due to family financial difficulties and moved to the Naga Hills in Manipur. She immersed herself in the local culture, studying the warrior traditions, language, customs, arts, and society. Her experiences extended beyond research, as she taught medicine and assisted with healthcare. She documented her time through photographs, interviews, and writings. During World War II, when Japanese armies invaded Burma in 1942 and threatened to advance into India, Bower mobilized the Nagas against the Japanese forces and led a group of scouts, known as the 'Bower Force', to search the Naga jungle for Japanese infiltrators.
