1993 ECF Game 2: "The Dunk" by John Starks, slamming over Horace Grant and Michael Jordan. The Knicks won a wild one that featured the ejections of Scottie Pippen (throwing the ball at the ref) and Greg Anthony (for "attempting to injure Jordan"). Also, Bill Cartwright and Charles Oakley collided, leading to richter scales registering the event. Led by the former grocery-bagger Starks, New York went up 2-0 on the two-time defending champs. In the previous season, the Knicks had fallen to the Bulls in a 7-Game series; the physicality of that series saw coaches Phil Jackson and Pat Riley engage in war of words over the officiating. That '91-'92 series was Pat Riley's first year with New York. Riley had won 4 titles with the Showtime Lakers in the 80's and in so doing became the biggest deal in coaching since Red Auerbach. Riley famously guaranteed that the Lakers would repeat as champions in '88 after defeating the Celtics in '87. They did, and while there were no public guarantees by Riley to repeat again in '89, Riley trademarked the term "three-peat" with his company Riles & Co. The Lakers did make it to the Finals again '89 but were swept by the Pistons in a rematch of '88. Riley won Coach of the Year for the 1st time in '90, but left LA for NBC after playoff defeat to the Suns. In '93, he led the Knicks to their best ever record (tied with '69-'70, a team Phil Jackson was on), and won his 2nd Coach of the Year award. Despite being up 2-0 with home court advantage, the Knicks would then lose 4 in a row to the Bulls, who went on to achieve that first three-peat since the Celtics of antiquity. Not only did Riley trademark "three-peat" but fail to win a 3rd title in a row, he feuded with the very guy (Phil Jackson) who would go on to actually achieve the feat the next season by going through Riley's Knicks. While the Knicks would get revenge on the Bulls in the '94 playoffs, Riley, who resigned via fax, left NY for the Heat in '95. He ended up retiring Jordan's #23 for the Heat, a team MJ never played for.
