What to do in your free time? This video shows a good option for a family outing. With a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape, the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra, located in the city of Niterói, Jurujuba Neighborhood, makes you travel back in time for more than 400 years of history. How is it? The Santa Cruz Fortress had its origin in 1555, with the installation of two cannons in a rudimentary fortification, by Nicolau Durand de Villegaignon. Located at the tip of the rocky promontory that dominates the entrance to the Guanabara Bay, from the east, it was intended to provide security against invaders and to ensure better conditions for the establishment of Antarctic France. After the expulsion of the French from Rio de Janeiro in 1567, and during the period when Brazil was a colony of Portugal, it received the denominations of Battery of Nossa Senhora da Guia and, later, Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra (1612), constituting an integral part of the system of defense for the entrance of the bay of Guanabara. Nowadays, the Artillery of the 1st Army Division, Artillery of Great Command that supported the actions of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force during World War II, occupies this centenary historical space. With part of its area registered in 1939 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute, the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra is considered one of the most valuable examples of Luso-Brazilian military architecture and was elected in 2010 as one of the Seven Wonders of the city of Niteroi. The Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra is open for the visitation of civilians and military personnel. The beauty of its buildings and its impressive architecture transport visitors to the fortification for almost five centuries of Brazilian history, covering 7,153 meters in a perfect open-air classroom. The Chapel of Santa Bárbara (with its fundamental stone dated of 1612), the 18th, 19th, and 20th century cannons (the largest collection of Whithworth cannons in the world), the Imperial Paiol and the other 12 points support the visitation circuit that takes place in groups guided by a military man from the Fortress, leaving the Colonial Gate.
