Psychological Dysfunction of the Madonna and the Wh-re Complex (Part One)

Coco introduces a new series breaking down the Madonna and Wh-re Complex (MWC). In this first video, Coco offers a brief social history of the complex before unpacking the psychological dynamics and patriarchal beliefs at play. First identified by Signmund Freud, MWC represents the internalization of dysfunctional patriarchal beliefs where sexual desire and love; sensuality and nurturing; and masculinity and femininity are viewed as mutually exclusive, oppositional forces. Adherence to these false binaries causes internal fracturing where a person rejects their own humanity and projects that rejection onto others. Meaning, a person who rejects their full humanity will reject the humanity of others. Within MWC, men reject their own feminine aspects of self and project that disdain onto women through cycles of idealization and degradation. Once a woman is attained, she is degraded and devalued through disgust. This degradation and disgust psychologically enables a man to feel above her, offering men a brief counterfeit sense of self-worth. This pattern manifests as men experiencing love without sex and sex without love. Socially, this pattern categorizes women into 2 categories - “good”, pure, desireless, chaste women who sacrifice self to provide comfort and salvation to others; and “bad” promiscuous women who deserve to be used and harmed for their agency, sensuality, and desire. This social cycle of men sourcing counterfeit self-worth through degrading women forms the most accessible currency of male identity and male bonding. These men bond with each other through the degradation of women, knowing and relating to each other through diminishing, harming, using, and violating women. All the while, these men will project their own intentions and feelings of inadequacies onto women to avoid the work of integration and self-development.
