National Register visit 177: Point Vicente Lighthouse. The old keepers of the lighthouse on Point Vicente in Palos Verdes used to tell of a ghostly woman that would move across the walkway at nighttime, garbed in a flowing white dress. Some said she had jumped to her death in mourning over her shipwrecked lover; others claimed she was the wife of a keeper who had fallen off the bluff below. Turns out the “Lady of the Light” was just a bit of white paint on the back of the lantern room that had degraded over time, causing a trick of the light. When they slapped on an extra layer of paint and some contact paper in 1955, the lady disappeared. Even with its ghost story debunked, and no keepers minding the beacon since the early 1970s, the Point Vicente Lighthouse is still an important navigational aid for ships heading south into the Port of LA.
