The Rijksweg 44 was the second motorway built in the Netherlands (at the time numbered Rijksweg 4), and much of the route between Leiden and Burgerveen still exists on top of the original earthworks and bridges despite having been resurfaced many times over the past 90 years. Having started in late 2025, "Project A44" will replace a number of bridges, most notably the Kaagbrug, Hoofdvaartviaduct, and Lisserwegviaduct. In this video, recorded in April 2025, the "original" state of the road is shown, with notable bridges and viaducts annotated. De Rijksweg 44 bestaat in enige zin nog in zijn oorspronkelijke staat, met zijn oude kunstwerken daterend uit de jaren 30. Inmiddels zijn een aantal van deze toe naar vervanging onder het kader van het "Project A44" wat reeds begonnen is.
