On peut toujours dans l’amoureux mystère from the cantata Aquilon et Orithie by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) Peter Harvey, baritone LONDON BAROQUE Ingrid Seifert, violin Charles Medlam, bass viol Terence Charlston, harpsichord From the liner notes: Aquilon et Orithie or ‘L’Enlèvement d’Orithie’ is a retelling of the Greek myth in which the god of the North wind, Boreas (or Aquilo in Roman mythology), falls in love with Oreithyia, princess of Athens. Aquilon is facing some resistance from the proud Orithie. Gentle persuasion is not producing the desired results so he persuades himself that an outburst of passion will advance his cause. The ‘fearsome rage’ seems to work, so he kidnaps Orithie who finally yields to his charms. Typically, the moral of the story – where there’s a will, there’s a way – is given in the final air.
