Lance Corporal Richard Parker, 24, of Canberra and Private Peter Gillson, 20, of Melbourne, were killed in November 1965 in a battle in Dong Nai province, northeast of former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. They were listed as missing in action until a team of Australian veterans, tipped by a former Viet Cong guerrilla soldier, excavated their remains. They were positively identified by Australian forensic experts at a lab in Vietnam and were the first Australian soldiers to be repatriated. The remains were placed in two wooden coffins, draped with Australian flags and loaded onto a C130 military plane at Hanoi International Airport. It was due to return to Australia later on Monday. A repatriation ceremony, held on the tarmac under the blazing sun, was attended by Gillson's widow and her two sons, one of whom was fathered by Gillson. Australian Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson and other Australian and Vietnamese officials also attended. Billson praised the government and the people of Vietnam for their assistance and cooperation for helping to bring "closer" to the grieving families. The remains will be buried next week in the soldiers' home towns. Australia sent some 50-thousand troops to fight alongside the Americans during the war.
