RUSSIA: KING JUAN & QUEEN SOPHIA OF SPAIN VISIT

(5 May 1997) Natural Sound King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sophia arrived in Moscow Monday for a three-day official visit. President Boris Yeltsin invited the royal couple when he was on a trip to Spain in April of 1994. The two leaders are to discuss a number of issues including Russian-Spanish trade and NATO expansion. Juan Carlos arrived Monday accompanied by 80 Spanish industrialists and bankers. The Spanish king was greeted at the airport by Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. He met later with President Boris Yeltsin. The two men were expected to discuss trade expansion, as well as economic and financial co-operation between Russia and Spain. The Spanish monarch is also looking at the possibility of signing a treaty on transport cooperation between the two countries. While in Russia, King Carlos and his delegation will also meet with First Deputy Prime Minister, Anatoly Chubais, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, Patriarch Alexy II of the Russian Orthodox Church, and a number of Russian business people. On the agenda is also the proposed Russia-NATO agreement, which is expected to be signed before the alliance expands to include former Soviet allies in Eastern Europe. Spain supports an increase of Russia's involvement in European security and favours a Russia-NATO agreement. Before leaving, the royal couple will open an exhibition of 20th-century Spanish art at Moscow's Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. The display includes 61 Salvador Dali canvases as well as some paintings of Pablo Picasso. King Carlos' visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the restoration of relations between Russia and Spain.
