The church was built from 1254 as a continuation of the Romanesque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Utrecht and was dedicated to Saint Martin. The church has been Protestant since 1580. The 112.32 meter high Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the tallest building in Utrecht. Until the ecclesiastical reorganization in 1559, the Dom was the only cathedral in the Northern Netherlands, an area that roughly coincides with the present-day Netherlands. Until the opening of St. Bavo's Cathedral in Haarlem in 1898, the Dom was the only church in the Netherlands built as a cathedral. Today the choir, transept and tower of the church building remain. The ship, whose construction was never completed, collapsed in 1674 as a result of natural disasters. As a result, the Dom Tower and the remaining part of the Dom Church became separate from each other.
