When children experience distress, it activates their attachment system, and they seek comfort from an attachment figure (caregiver). If the child receives the comfort they seek, they experience stress reduction. This deactivates the attachment system and allows the child to return to other interests and activities. If the child does not receive comfort, their distress persists. Quality adult responses to children's distress create a "felt sense of safety," forming the original Safe Place for infants outside the womb. These responses also promote healthy inner speech and encourage children to offer empathy to themselves and others in moments of distress.
