N-PATH: Developing the interventional nephrologists of the future

Nick Inston (Birmingham, UK) talks to Maurizio Gallieni (Milan, Italy) at EVA 2022 (24–25 June, Patras, Greece) about N-PATH—a European Union Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance funded project that involves eight universities, the European Renal Association, and the Vascular Access Society —which is “dedicated to developing, in a select number of nephrology fellows, specific interventional nephrology abilities”. N-PATH (Nephrology Partnership for Advancing Technology in Healthcare), is made up of four modules: REMAP (kidney biopsy, renal expert in molecular pathology), REVAC (renal expert in vascular access), REMUS (renal expert in medical ultrasound), and REPED (renal expert in peritoneal dialysis). Fellows will travel to each of the eight institutions with the aim of training “a group of individuals that will be able to develop interventional nephrology in the future”. Asked by Inston about what these fellows may gain specifically from the EVA meeting, Gallieni said that it has allowed N-PATH fellows to “get together again” as well as “expose them to a cutting-edge meeting on vascular access, interacting with other specialists in particular vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists, which is something they don’t currently get in the curriculum of the N-PATH project”.
