In this video, I show how I built a walnut paper tray with maple inlay and splines. The entire build took one week, and I made this as a Father's day gift. This paper tray is based off of Steve Ramsey's project in the "The Weekend Woodworker" course, which I took myself and highly recommend. I altered the design by changing the joinery significantly and adding the inlay along the top, but the overall dimensions are the same. The corners of the tray are mitered, and I used a spline jig to put two maple splines in each corner. For more details on how I built the spline jig, see my build video: • Super Simple Jig for Perfect Splines The top of the tray has an 1/8th inch maple inlay along it. The bottom of the tray is 1/4 inch plywood that was stained. The plywood fits within a rabbet and is not glued in place. To cut a smooth curve in the front wall of the tray, I first cut a plywood template and used a flush trim follower bit in my router to make the final cut. This created a smooth rounded curve.
