The End of Cash (2025)

In this video, I discuss the war on physical cash that is beginning to be waged by economists, central banks, and governments. Governments dislike physical cash for many reasons: 1) It can be used to avoid paying taxes; 2) It enables privacy, which can be used for both legal and illegal transactions (illegal drug trade, terrorism, prostitution, illegal gambling); 3) Paper money and coins can spread bacteria or viruses like COVID-19; 4) Physical cash makes it difficult for central banks to impose negative nominal interest rates. When nominal interest rates go negative (as they have in parts of Europe), savers are incentivized to withdraw their money from banks and hold physical cash, in an effort to avoid having their savings depleted by negative interest rates. This makes it more difficult for central banks to lower interest rates below the zero bound. One way around this is for governments and central banks to gradually abolish cash. They can do this through outright prohibition, by imposing cash holding limits or bank withdrawal limits, by eliminating banknotes (paper money), by charging rent for cash, or by engineering a system where stores must charge a premium for cash purchases over purchases using digital money. Sweden is projected to go cashless around 2025, and I would expect other countries to follow in their wake. Both gold and Bitcoin should benefit from this war on physical cash.
