On Ash Wednesday, Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning opened the Lenten season by teaching that Lent is a sacred time of consecration—marked by prayer, fasting, Scripture, and service. Using Psalm 51:1–12, she reminded the church that Ash Wednesday is a moment of honest introspection, where we invite God to “check us out,” expose what is out of alignment, and guide us back on track. Through David’s prayer of repentance, we are called to seek God’s mercy and ask to be “washed thoroughly”—not with surface religion, but with a deep spiritual cleansing that leads to transformation. This message is a call to awareness and action: to shut down what is grieving God, return to His presence, and trust Him to restore joy, renew our spirits, and create in us clean hearts for the journey to the cross.
