What is a Cantilever?

Project Architect Phillip Condley explains cantilevers in about 90 seconds. www.dewberry.com I'm Phillip Conley, project architect with Dewberry in our Tulsa, Oklahoma, office. In today's Dewberry Explains video, I would like to talk about the concept of cantilevers and how they're utilized in the design of building structures. The definition of a cantilever is a structure or horizontal surface that projects horizontally beyond its vertical support, such as a wall or a column. This graphic shows an example of conceptual cantilevered structure secured to the side of a cliff with the floor plate hanging freely above the void below. Cantilevers are used in real world applications, such as this Tulsa office project, where we had an existing 16-story historically significant structure built in 1918. We designed an addition next to it that cantilevers over the existing structure with an additional 20 stories above it. Through the use of a cantilevered floor of trusses and carefully matching the new terra cotta façade with the existing, the two separate but connecting structures appear to be one complete 36-story tower. Another example of a more obvious cantilevered structure is the Tandy Academic Building located on the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences campus and designed by our Tulsa office in 2017. This 10-foot cantilever utilizes 44-inch-deep, wide-flange structural beams to support the load of the three stories above. Fun fact: The I-shaped beam used here is one of the largest standard beam shapes available to U.S. steel fabricators, weighing over 250 pounds per linear foot.
