Singing exercise that highlights lower neighbor chromatics in a diatonic major scale. Created for the students in the Department of Music at Coastal Carolina University, Conway SC. Exercise 1 – This exercise highlights a diatonic lower-neighbor sequence in ascending and descending order in C major. Notice the contrast between consonance and dissonance created by diatonic stepwise motion, including natural whole-step and half-step relationships. Exercise 2 – This exercise highlights a chromatic lower-neighbor sequence in ascending and descending order in C major. Notice the use of non-diatonic tones and how they may sound more dissonant than diatonic neighbor tones. Exercise 3 – The chromatic lower-neighbor sequence can also provide insight into the use and sound of secondary dominants. While the I–vi relationship fits naturally within a diatonic major scale, the use of a chromatic neighbor tone as part of a secondary dominant shifts the tonal emphasis away from the previously established key. This exercise highlights a chromatic lower-neighbor sequence in ascending and descending order in C major with an implied secondary dominant harmony (e.g., iii–V/iii–iii). Each exercise will be performed with piano accompaniment. Sing the notated pitches using correct solfège syllables and corresponding hand signs. During the first repetition, the piano will play both staves. During the second repetition, only the accompaniment will be played, and the singer will be responsible for performing the treble-clef line.
