Tianyi Pavilion is the oldest existing private library in China, located on Tianyi Street on the west side of Yuehu in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China. Tianyi Pavilion was built in the fortieth year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1561) under the leadership of Fan Qin, the then Right Attendant of the Ministry of War. It not only collected a large number of precious books and classics, but also had a significant impact on the construction of other library buildings in later generations. At one time, Tianyi Pavilion had a collection of over 70000 volumes of books, but in modern times, due to corruption, theft, and natural damage, only over 13000 volumes of books were left. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, after investigation and fundraising, the number of books reached 300000. In 1982, Tianyi Pavilion was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the second batch of national key cultural relics protection units. At present, the Tianyi Pavilion is located in Ningbo Tianyi Pavilion Museum. Due to its history and popularity, Tianyi Pavilion has also become a symbol of Ningbo's urban image.
