Elshadai Children's Village farm - CultivAid, Ethiopia

Elshadai Children's Village supports over 160 children under its care. The village provides both basic necessities and education from pre-school to grade 8. The village operates 11 hectares of farmland and a dairy farm to supply its children's needs for vegetables, fruits and dairy products as well as to generate income for the village. The farm and dairy farm are currently self sufficient and able to fully cover their operational costs. In order to provide sufficient vegetables, fruits and milk to the students there is a need to improve productivity at the farm. Furthermore there is a desire to have the farm's activities support additional activities such as education at the school and reduce its dependency on the generosity of donors. CultivAid is a social enterprise that specializes in knowledge development with a focus in the agricultural, water and nutrition. CultivAid emphasizes a holistic approach that combines market based strategies with development interventions, combining agro-business and rural development initiatives that can address issues of poverty and malnutrition. CultivAid has been operating in Ethiopia since 2013 with a focus on transferring Israeli Knowledge and technology through hands on training and demonstration. CultivAid has developed a medium scale farm model that enables self sufficiency, regional capacity building and value chain development which together aim to support the building of Ethiopia's agricultural knowledge infrastructure and to further support the transformation of the agricultural economy.
