Reading between the lines and anticipating where a conversation is headed for learners of English 🏌️ I’m back with a brand new video And not just for an activity, but with a whole lesson here 👍 You know I always advocate for active development of soft skills in English lessons It’s easy for us language teachers to get caught in typical grammar or lexical oriented lessons, just like in textbooks And it’s important to remember we don’t just teach the basics of a language, we also develop communication skills Here’s an example of a lesson focusing on communication and where language practice is targeted at real conversation In debates, not everyone plays fair! I’m sure you and your students can remember examples of when journalists, politicians, interviewers or debaters pushed someone in the corner and made their position really hard to defend Tom and I refer to this as “Leading to Conclusions” A lot of our students jokingly call this “Cancel Culture” You’ll find all the activities mentioned in the video on our website for teachers red.resource-education.com under the tags “Leading to Conclusions” and “Debate Skills” This strategy can come up in debates, discussions, negotiations and such Instead of choosing to “win” the argument, the person focuses on making the other “lose” their argument There are 3 main types of strategies to do that (you’ll find the details and exercises on our materials on the website) 1️⃣ Pointed Questions 2️⃣ Mischaracterizing 3️⃣ Implying There are great exercises to practise that and I introduce an engaging speaking activity on that called “Make it Look Like” 😊 Let me know what you think and how you develop soft skills and solid communication skills in your lessons! I always look forward to getting feedback 💐
