The photos in this slideshow were taken by Michael Pietrusewsky while on an excursion to Ullapool & Inverewe Garden in the Scottish Highlands courtesy of Viking ocean cruises on April 28, 2025. Ullapool, in northwest Scotland, is a small village (around 1,500 inhabitants) and port located in in the county of Ross and Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands, about 45 miles northwest of Inverness. The main economic activities in Ross and Cromarty are crofting (land tenue and small food production), fishing, and tourism. Ullapool sits on a deep-sea loch, a significant natural harbor. The region surrounding Ullapool is dominated by rugged mountains. The Scottish Highlands are renowned for their natural beauty. Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden, approximately 52 miles south of Ullapool, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands, renowned for its diverse collection of plants from around the world. The garden was created from barren land in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie on the 2,100-acre estate bought for him by his mother. To overcome the challenges of wind, soil and the environment, he planted a mixture of large trees (e.g., Corsican Pine, Douglas Fir. California redwoods etc.) and shrubs (e.g. Rhododendrons, including Himalayan varieties etc.). His vision was to grow as many exotic plants as possible, a vision he achieved by the time of his death in 1922. The garden covers some 50 acres and has over 2,500 exotic plants and flowers. Ther remaining acreage is used for recreation and conservation. The garden and estate have been the property of the National Trust for Scotland since it was given to the Trust along with a generous endowment for its future upkeep by Osgood's daughter Mairi Sawyer in 1952.
