County: Cambridgeshire Date filmed: Saturday the 25th of May 2024 Videos filmed between 14:55 and 15:58 Route: Ely to Peterborough Line Between Ely (ELY) and Manea (MNE) Stations Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: Beald Drove, Little Downham (CB6 2UG) An action-packed hour at the eastern-most of 5 level crossings around Little Downham a few miles out of Ely, Cambridgeshire. This video features 7 different activations, including one featuring a friendly horn salute from a driver, another seeing two trains at once (the alarms speed up), one with an intermodal freight, and most notably, one featuring the "Hanson Hanse" rail tour - quite a good selection for a Saturday! This was the second of three times I saw this top & tail Branch Line Society-run tour, and here it's seen just after navigating the Ely West Curve and thrashing towards March to tick off some additional freight lines. The Class 20 was leading, and both locomotives were powering quite well. Coaches for this came in the form of a London Transport 4TC Electric Multiple Unit slam-door set. Hope you enjoy! This is probably one of the best level crossings you can visit, and a firm favourite of mine. It really is in the middle of nowhere, down a very bumpy lane, which only leads into fields, you need a car with decent off-road capabilities to navigate without needing to take a 10 minute or so walk down it. The only other people you'll likely encounter here will be the farmers moving between fields, and track-side views are great. The only reason it has LED road traffic lights is apparently due to a farmer erroneously striking one of the old halogen bulb type sets, and all four were replaced due to lack of spares. The alarm on the Ely-bound side always seems to keep changing, as this is the third different alarm in three visits!
