Lecture by Andrew Mallinson: This lecture was originally delivered as part of the Rendering Utopias course, exploring the relationship between technology and utopia, looking at a history of technology and the ways in which they have impacted society, questioning how we want to live with technologies in the future. About the course: Technologies are often touted as the tools that will lead us toward utopia, but the problems they create continue to lead us toward social and environmental disaster, disproportionality affecting the most vulnerable in society. This intensive course, produced by Feminist Internet, helped students from across UAL to investigate their relationship with technologies, looking at the roles they play in our lives, with the aim of rendering a new, more inclusive model for the future. What did the course involve: Participants engaged in a series of critical conversations and activities over the course of the week, delving into subjects that explore the social and political implications of technology as well as its revolutionary potential. Having the opportunity to use tools such as AI Image Generation and gain knowledge from a variety of sources including environmentalism, and queer and feminist theory. The outcomes of the course were produced collectively in the final days of the course, during which students had the opportunity to contribute their own unique skills.
