(3 Feb 2021) England's Chief Medical Officer on Wednesday said he thought the UK was now past the peak for the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, but urged people to proceed with caution. "Most of my colleagues think we are past the peak. That doesn't mean you can never have another peak," Dr. Chris Whitty told journalists at the daily news conference in London. Whitty also warned that people who have been vaccinated will have no protection in the first two or three weeks after getting the vaccine. In older people it may be longer, he said. He urged people who have already received their first dose of the vaccine to continue obeying social distancing rules. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the reopening of schools on March 8 remains a possibility, "if the data allows" Johnson said the Government will be issuing a "roadmap" out of the national lockdown during the week of February 22.
