What should you plant for summer food plots? In this video, SWAPA Land Agent Brad Farris shares his proven strategy for establishing productive summer plots that attract deer and turkeys while improving soil health. After returning from the National Wild Turkey Federation convention, Brad realized many landowners were asking the same question about wildlife habitat management: What works best for summertime food plots? In this episode of the SWAPA Land Stewardship Series, Brad walks through a two-part program he uses on his own property. First, he plants joint vetch in early May, drilling it at about 10 pounds per acre. Because vetch can be slow to establish and sensitive to planting depth, timing and shallow planting are key. Later in May or early June, he follows with a diverse warm-season forage mix that may include peas, beans, milo, sunflower, lab lab, and buckwheat. This blend provides excellent nutrition for deer and turkeys while also improving soil health. Brad also explains how fall-planted clover plots can provide nearly year-round attraction for wildlife in shaded woodland plots. By drilling wheat and oats and broadcasting clover over the top, landowners can establish a reliable food source that benefits wildlife and supports long-term habitat improvement. If you're managing land for deer hunting, turkey habitat, or better soil health, these simple food plot strategies can make a big difference. Learn more land management tips from SWAPA Land and see how thoughtful stewardship practices can improve your property for generations.
