We take a slow walk through the city center of Gunsan, a port city on Korea’s west coast. This area is rich with modern historical sites, where past and present blend naturally as you walk. Renovated cafés and exhibition spaces housed in old buildings, a photo studio known as a filming location for classic films, and a quiet lunch at Hanilok, a local restaurant that has stood here for decades. We follow the rhythm of the city through the sounds of everyday life. In the alleys lined with old Japanese-style houses, we observe open layouts where the yard, wooden floor, and interior connect seamlessly. Low eaves, sliding doors, and wooden structures shape the space, revealing traces of the city’s modern history. Perched on a hillside, Malraengi Village was formed between the 1940s and 1960s and is still home to local residents today. Narrow alleys, stairways, shared wells, and open courtyards quietly reflect how people once lived here. The walk then continues to Gyeongam-dong Railway Village. Rail tracks still running between houses, along with old-fashioned snacks and small hands-on experiences, naturally bring back memories of everyday life from the past. Follow the unhurried sense of time that defines the city of Gunsan— slowly, and quietly.
