Artist SIEMON ALLEN discusses Stamps (1993)

Artist Siemon Allen discusses his artwork 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙨 (1993) which he constructed using my childhood stamp collection of South African stamps. The piece explores propaganda in apartheid South Africa and its effects on his childhood days in Durban. Forming part of the South32 Collection housed at Javett-UP, the work is now on view in the first floor gallery, where 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙮 exhibition’s theme 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴/ 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦s explores how images flow through time, across space, and into our lives. Like Siemon’s piece which functions as a photograph, these images tell us stories, but we also project our own narratives onto them. #OneAndTheMany #ComeToJavettUP
