Hello friends! Last Sunday was heritage day here in Belgium. And my local farmer organised an open stable day where everyone could meet and greet the newborn lambs. The farmer asked me to come, sit and spin the yarn from his Flemish sheep breed and have a good time. And a good time was had! How could it not? We are spinning a heritage breed (from the middle ages) on a heritage farm (from the middle ages, if you want to know more about this farm, you can check out this video by the History Hikers which is totally not my husband and mine other channel: • Largest medieval Cistercian nunnery i... ), and spinning itself is also just such a huge part of our heritage (from prehistoric times). All the farm animals were roaming around, and the lambs were the absolute cutest. Of course when we have such a topic, here I go ranting again about wool not being valued enough in Belgium. We should be able to look beyond the economic value of wool and look at how beautiful and soft it is. Flemish sheep wool is my baby and I will die to protect it. But industrialisation and capitalism deem our local wool worthless and that gets me into a raging fit every time. In the meanwhile I also got to introduce some children to the craft, which is always a plus. I must say some of them were a natural at treadling and drafting. Being able to give a demonstration this beautiful ancient craft is a blessing, especially on national heritage day. #crafting #spinning #heritage #historiccrafts #historybouding #sheep #farmanimals
