Teaching Hand Signals for Deaf Dogs I have a deaf puppy that will be coming into my 2-week board and train program. In preparation for Edie's (Lurcher) arrival, I pre-selected hand signals. The selected hand signals met the parameters that would not only help Edie but also help Edie's family when transferring the skill set at the end of the 2-week board and train program. The hand signals are a combination of "universal" hand signals used by the mainstream as will as ASL (American Sign Language). In this video, I utilized my dog Ruby (2-year old standard poodle) NOT deaf. All of my dogs in my 2-week board and train program know hand signals by the time they go home. I structure my dog program to include success for the dog and their family. In this video note my body language (non-verbal cues). Dogs read our body language prior to or in conjunction with our verbal. Note my facial expression and arm and leg movements. It's important to stand upright not bent over in the dog's face. If a command is learned with the trainer bent over from the waist then the dog will expect you to be bent over always going forward. If you are standing upright giving commands it is more congruent with the family's natural movements. Consistency in commands is important and transferring skills to the family is also important. In addition, I train by "no touch with my hand" in order to get the dog's attention. Working at distance it is not possible to touch the dog's body to cue (get attention to perform a command). There are many variables to take into consideration when training including adding modifications if the dog is deaf. The tools that I utilize include: marker training (food, toys, praise), leash, hand signals, verbal cue (hearing dog only), e-collar (low stimulation and/or vibrate), and place board. As the program progresses over the 2-week some of the tools drop out such as marker training and the leash (distance goals). Commands include: recall (come), sit, down, place (boundary training), heel (formal leash walking), follow (informal leash walking), "go play" (release command).
