43 mines I have explored (presented alphabetically) in the Goodsprings Mining District in Southern Nevada (I would have explored more, but a case of Plantar Fasciitis laid me up for a year). The BLM and Clark County are on an aggressive campaign to fill in or seal up adits of old mines. Pressure is being put on owners to post their mine property. Many mines are on private property so obtain the owner's permission or proceed at your own risk. Many mines have vertical shafts so use extreme caution. Do not remove anything (i.e., ladders, rails, equip, etc) from these sites as the BLM and owners can go after you. Recommendations: I recommend carrying a Portable Multi-Gas Meter (for H2S gas, methane, low oxygen, etc.), a head net and a long-sleeved shirt for Africanized bees (yes, they have been known to inhabit old mines), and beware of rattlesnakes (especially just inside the adit entrance) during hot weather. Also, a large presence of rat/mouse feces could indicate the possibility of Hantavirus.
