(1 Nov 2024) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP TELEVISION Valencia metropolitan area, Spain - 01 November 2024 1. Various of volunteers returning home after helping in areas affected by the floods 2. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Jonathan Suarez, volunteer: “I put myself in the position of the victim. So the favor, it’s mutual. In the end, people must help other people. Politics and politicians in Spain are who they are. It is what it is. This is Spain.” 3. Shot of volunteers speaking 4. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Jose Manuel Munoz, volunteer: “We went there, with a group of doctors and nurses. But when it comes to medical emergencies, it wasn’t as bad as we were expecting. But on the other hand, there was a big need of psychological support to many people that were trapped. Especially elderly people living alone and feeling lonely, with relatives living far away. And they saw their world crushing down.” 5. Shot of volunteers speaking 6. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Carolina Serrat and Julia Carbonell, volunteers: “I think there were too many people, and at times we got in the way. I think people should choose a fixed location, wherever they know somebody in need. And in that way, you can be of great help. They were very grateful to us, and we were able to help a lot. But people showing up when they don’t know anybody, then it gets very complicated. Going from one person to the next offering their help, and it doesn’t work. With more organization, things would go better.” 7. Various of volunteers STORYLINE: Thousands of local Valencia residents armed with spades, brooms had walked for hours to cross into the Valencia city districts of Paiporta, Catarroja, Massanassa and helped people clean the streets after floods swept through the regions. Local authorities began to call on people not go into the flood affected area as it was causing access problems for emergency services. Volunteers Caroline Serrat and Juliet Carbonell who were returning said they thought too many volunteers. Spain’s deadliest natural disaster in living memory has left at least 205 people dead.
