Join me as we uncover one of Sri Lanka’s hidden natural marvels, the Samanala Dam (සමනලවැව වේල්ල), a major hydroelectric dam commissioned in 1992. Primarily designed for power generation, the Samanalawewa Project (or Samanala Reservoir Project) stands as Sri Lanka’s third-largest hydroelectric scheme, generating approximately 405 GWh of energy each year. Interestingly, due to construction errors, a large leak emerged, giving rise to a unique bathing spot fed by this natural water flow. Set amid stunning landscapes, this spot came about unexpectedly: in 1988, during construction, a substantial leak was discovered, which created a scenic, natural bathing pool. As the reservoir was initially filled, a major leak appeared around 300 meters downstream on the right bank, triggering a landslip. Although curtain grouting was used to control the flow, a gentle stream still flows continuously, forming a picturesque pool that’s ideal for a refreshing dip, fed by clear, natural spring water. Know Before You Go: Location: Samanala Wewa Rd, Balangoda 70100 (https://g.co/kgs/xntpNwR) Open Daily: The Samanala Wewa Dam and its unique bathing spots are open to visitors 24 hours x 7 days. Weather Conditions: This spot is best avoided during heavy rain, as flooding can occur and the Samanala Dam may release large volumes of water through its drainage system, making conditions potentially hazardous.
