In our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians! Long live the intifada! // In 2005, Sabrina, a lion cub at the Gaza Zoo, was kidnapped by a gang of drug traffickers. She was taken to a photography studio, where her captors mutilated and mistreated her: cutting off her tail, declawing her, starving her, removing some of her teeth, and charging people to take pictures with her as a sideshow of sorts. Her brother Sakhr was reported in the news to have refused food after Sabrina’s theft, and to have roared inconsolably. Sabrina was discovered when Hamas found her while busting the drug ring, and returned her to the Gaza Zoo. Meanwhile… Palestinian poet, writer, scholar, and activist Refaat Alareer came to prominence after he was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Dec. 2023. Refaat taught world literature and creative writing at the Islamic University of Gaza and was a powerful advocate for young writers in Gaza. His final poem If I Must Die was widely read, and translated into more than 250 languages. Among his many accomplishments, Refaat Alareer was also a longtime, dedicated volunteer at the Gaza Zoo. Refaat, Sakhr, and Sabrina all survived Israeli offensives circa 2008-2009, though most of the other zoo residents did not. This song imagines what Refaat may have said to Sakhr and Sabrina sometime after that. // music and lyrics: Sorcha McCarrey voice and piano by: Sorcha McCarrey audio engineer: Aldus V
