Video Script Dunkeld could be described as a cathedral city but it is in fact a small Scottish rural town. The town has three main features; the bridge over the River Tay, white washed houses and shops in two main streets, and a cathedral that in part is in ruins and part still a place of worship. The bridge, designed by Thomas Telford and built by the 4th Duke of Atholl opened in 1809. The main thoroughfare through the town has hotels, food outlets and artisan crafts shops. Perhaps Dunkeld’s greatest claim to fame is that Canada’s first liberal prime minister, Alexander Mackenzie, was born just a few miles north at Logierait, and worked in the town as a boy before emigrating. The black iron metal pole on the corner of this building is an old weavers measure of cloth called the “Elle”. In a wall at the northern end of the Cathedral you can still see holes made by musket balls from the battle of Dunkeld back in 1689. Birnam lies on the southern bank of the river Tay and is smaller than Dunkeld. Whilst Beatrix Potter is mostly associated with the Lake District, along with her family she spent many long summers near here at Dalguise.
