The Swan (Le Cygne) is the 13th movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals (1886). It is written for solo cello with piano accompaniment and is one of the most famous and lyrical pieces from the suite. The music portrays the graceful, gliding motion of a swan on water, with the cello’s smooth legato line representing the bird and the piano’s rippling arpeggios evoking the water’s gentle movement. Despite the suite being light-hearted, Saint-Saëns allowed The Swan to be performed publicly during his lifetime because of its elegance and seriousness. Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) was a French composer, pianist, organist, and conductor. A child prodigy, he gave his first public concert at age ten and later studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He became renowned for his technical brilliance and versatility, composing symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber works, and choral music. His famous pieces include The Carnival of the Animals, Danse Macabre, Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony), and the opera Samson et Dalila. He was celebrated for combining classical clarity with Romantic expressiveness and remained active as a composer and performer throughout his long life.
