AMCD Webinar Series: Brooks Dickerson Tinsley: Successfully Navigating the Faculty Search

Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development Presents: Successfully Navigating the Faculty Search Dr. Michael Brooks is a Counselor Education Associate Professor at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT) in Greensboro, North Carolina. His research centers on Black male success factors, Counselor Education Pedagogy, and ex-offender recidivism and vocational rehabilitation. Dr. Brooks serves as Program Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Counselor Education Ph.D. program. In addition to his faculty role, he is also the Chair of the University’s Institution Review Board (IRB) and a member of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. Since 1999, Dr. Brooks has held several positions (Treasurer, Southern Regional Representative, President, JMCD Associate Editor) in the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD). Also, since 2014, he has been the Editor in Chief for the International Journal for Social Science Studies. Dr. Brooks is a Past-Presenting of the Association for Multicultural Counseling Development, as well as the Alabama Association for Counselor Education & Supervision. Brooks received his a BA in Psychology from Morehouse College, and an MA and Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Central Florida. Prior to a beginning a career in higher education, Dr. Brooks worked as a practicing counselor with local community mental health, outpatient substance abuse, and employee assistance agencies. He’s treated or provided indirect care to a diverse clientele – couples, families, homeless, HIV/AIDS, as well as clients with varying abilities. Dr. Asha Dickerson is a Counselor Educator at Argosy University Atlanta and Owner of AD Advantage Counseling & Education Services, LLC. She is a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor located in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Dr. Dickerson is a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and alumni of the University of Alabama at Birmingham having graduated with bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and History and a Master’s Degree in Community/Agency Counseling. She received a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision at Auburn University. She is very active in several community, state, and national organizations; currently serving as the Southern Region Representative of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD). Dr. Dickerson has received numerous awards including the 2018 University of Alabama-Birmingham Rising Star Award and 2017 Argosy Atlanta Counseling Faculty of the Year. She has also been named an AACTE Holmes Scholar, ACES Emerging Leaders Fellow, and inaugural NBCC Foundation Minority Fellow. Dr. Dickerson’s clinical and academic specialties include social and cultural diversity, addictions, and blended family issues. Her goal is to educate, encourage, and enrich the lives of her clients, students, employees, and the community through her commitment to advocacy, mental health, family wellness, and leadership. Dr. Taunya Marie Tinsley, D.Min., Ph.D., NCC, LPC, graduated in December 2005 from Duquesne University with a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. She received her M.A. degree in Higher Education Administration and College Student Development in 1995 from the University of Iowa. Dr. Tinsley also holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN where she was also inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2014. In April 2013, Dr. Tinsley completed her requirements for the Certificate in Missional Theology from Biblical Theological Seminary. Finally, in December 2016 Dr. Tinsley earned her Doctor of Ministry with a focus in Prophetic Congregational Development Using 21st Century Methods, Establishing Strong Leadership from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. Dr. Tinsley has over 25 years working with culturally diverse educators, pastoral leaders, students, athletes and congregants in the secondary and college/university academic, athletic/sporting, and faith-based environments. Dr. Tinsley spent nine years at California University of Pennsylvania as an Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Program Coordinator for the Sports Counseling Certificate Program. Dr. Tinsley also served as the Director of Graduate Programs in Counseling and Associate Professor at Waynesburg University where she led the program through the CACREP-Accreditation application process for the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. On July 1, 2018, Dr. Tinsley transitioned into her new role as the Director of the Graduate School of Counseling at Missio Seminary (a new name for Biblical Theological Seminary) in Philadelphia, PA.
