Read the instructions below. Also read the FAQ as it has been reported that some Tecsun PL-390 radios are not allowing this trick to work. Instructions: 1. Turn on radio. 2. Select the SW band. You must be on the SW band in order for this trick to work. 3. Select a quiet frequency range with very little or no activity. Also a range with very little or no background noise 4. Tune down with the tuning dial, lets say 5500 to 5475 kHz. Do not tune up, eg 5500 to 5525 kHz, as the trick will not work by dong it this way. You must tune down. 5. Once you have tuned down, press the "VF" (on other radios it might be labelled as "Scan") for a couple of seconds until the radio starts to scan down. 6. Stop the scan by tuning down with the tuning dial. 7. If all worked well, you should hear the background is a lot higher than before. This means you successfully disabled the soft-mute / AGC. If you want to enable the soft-mute / AGC again, switch off the radio & switch it back on. FAQ Q. Does this work on all Tecsun PL-300 series radios, such as PL-310, PL-380, etc...? A. I cannot make any guarantees it will but you will have to try yourself. From what I know, the Tecsun PL-300 series radios use the si4734/35 chip which is also on the PL-390 so I am assuming it will though I cannot be 100% certain. Q. I cannot get it to work on my Tecsun PL-390 like in this video. Why? A. Either you did not carry out the instructions properly, or you might have a different revision such as a later version of the PL-390. I got my PL-390 in its 1st couple of years of release, so my guess is that later versions have new firmware that have disabled this trick. Ask somebody else to give this a try or take your time when trying to disable the soft-mute if you know your PL-390 is an early release version. Q. Does this work for FM as well? A. When I tried, it did not. But if anyone has managed to get this to work, then let me know. Q. Does this trick work for listening to MW & LW without the soft-mute / AGC being active? A. Yes it can, but remember you must be on SW first to carry out this trick. Then you can select the MW or LW band & listen in without the soft-mute / AGC being active. Q. Where is the "VF" or "Scan" button on my radio? A. From what I have seen, some of the Tecsun PL-300 series radios either have a "VF" or "Scan" button labelled. They both do the same thing which is automatic scanning. Check your instruction booklet. If you lost your booklet, then it should be available as a PDF on the internet. Q. I live where there is a lot of noise on the bands caused by electrical devices & other man made noise. This causes a lot of backgorund noise on shortwave. How can I know this trick worked by making sure my radio has disabled the soft-mute / AGC? A. Make sure the built-in telescopic antenna is down or put away in position like when you are not using your radio to minimise background noise. Also take a little walk outdoors where there is very little or no man made noise. Q. Does this trick work for other series of Tecsuns, such as the PL-660, PL-680 & PL-880? A. As far as I am aware, no. For the PL-660, you need to mod the actual board of the circuit using a solder to disable the soft-mute / AGC. Just Google "radioscanner.ru tecusn pl-660 disable squelch mod" to find out more. On the PL-680, no known soft-mute / AGC mod has been found yet at the time of typing this. On the PL-880, you can disable the soft-mute / AGC by accessing the hidden features menu. Just Google "Tecsun PL-880 disable soft-mute". Q. Is this a permanent or temporary feature if I do this trick on my radio? A. Temporary only. When you switch off the radio & turn it back on, it will go back to the default setting which is having the soft-mute / AGC on.
