Redwoods, a non-fiction picture book by Jason Chin, weaves together the imagination of a child reading a book with fascinating information about redwood trees and forests. The book starts out in my hometown, NYC, in a subway station, where a little boy finds the book on the bench next to him, picks it up, and starts to read it. The book takes him on an imaginative journey to the redwood forests in California- the world around him becomes the forest as he emerges from the subway station. The little boy explores the forest, completely immersing himself in each new fact. Using his imagination, he experiences the redwood forest in his own unique way. The book eventually leads him back to the city, where he leaves the book on the bench in a park. A little girl picks it up and is off on her own similar journey… I love this book for so many reasons- I love how well the author captures the way children don’t just digest facts in books, they imagine what it would be like to experience them. Each fact presented is beautifully illustrated and incorporates a child’s sense of wonderment. It shows how even city kids can experience nature 3000 miles away, and how it can be shared with others. In this book reading, information, nature, are all for everyone to experience in an awe-inspiring way.
