I recently read the wonderful new book--"Al Schmitt on the Record: The Magic Behind the Music"--in which he states that the reason the Jefferson Airplane wanted him to produce their next LP--"After Bathing at Baxters"--was because they were dissatisfied with the amount of reverb present on "Surrealistic Pillow"--produced by David Hassinger--and wanted a change... I couldn't agree more. If I had one record I would like to see re-mixed, "Pillow" would be near the top of the list... So-oo, I had most of the makings for a live version of SP--missing only "How Do You Feel" which didn't quite make it to the setlists back then--and thought it would be fun to put together a....ummmm...rougher version of "Surrealistic Pillow"... (If anyone has a live HDYF, send it on and I'll revise this compilation...) So-ooo, here tis: "She Has Funny Cars" 1967, Unknown Venue "Somebody to Love" Monterey Pop Festival June 17, 1967 "My Best Friend" Cáfe Au Go Go, New York, NY March 5th,1967 "Today" 1967, Unknown Venue "Comin' Back to Me" May 1967, The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" The Fillmore, SF November 26th, 1966 "D.C.B.A.–25" The Fillmore, SF November 26th, 1966 "How Do You Feel" No live recording found...sigh "Embryonic Journey" Jorma, 1962 San Jose, CA "White Rabbit" The Fillmore, SF November 26th, 1966 "Plastic Fantastic Lover" 1967, Unknown Venue I tried to pick recordings that were in the spirit of the original SP sessions, and not live versions of the songs as they were played even a few months later... Enjoy!! Bruce
