Why is TB such a big problem? • India accounts for over 27% of the world’s TB cases — the highest burden globally. • Every day, over 1,000 people die due to TB-related complications. • Factors like undernutrition, poverty, overcrowding, and poor awareness make it worse. Key Challenges: • Drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB): Rising cases that don’t respond to first-line medicines. • Delayed diagnosis and treatment dropouts. • Stigma: Patients hide their illness, worsening the spread. • Co-infection with HIV, further weakening the immune system. Government Response: • National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) — aiming to make India TB-free by 2025 (5 years ahead of the global SDG target). • Launch of Nikshay portal to monitor treatment. • Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana: ₹500/month nutritional support for TB patients. • Focus on private sector notification, rapid molecular tests, and community awareness. But success depends on awareness, nutrition, early diagnosis, and zero discrimination.
