After six long years of closure, the Alpine Tunnel is finally open again, and we set out to see it for ourselves! Our journey takes us over Hancock Pass, one of Colorado’s rugged high-country wagon roads, to the west portal of the Alpine Tunnel. Once the highest railroad tunnel in North America, the Alpine Tunnel was built by the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad in 1881. Though the tunnel itself has collapsed, the ruins of Alpine Station, the turntable, and the hand-built Palisades wall remain as monuments to grit, ambition, and Colorado’s narrow-gauge railroading past. Along the way, we tackle challenging off-road terrain, explore ghost town ruins, and walk the same paths where steam locomotives once roared under the Continental Divide.
