Israel’s parliament passes death penalty bill targeting Palestinians

Israel's parliament has passed a new death penalty law that applies exclusively to Palestinians, advanced by far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who celebrated the vote with champagne inside the chamber. The bill, which could take effect in 90 days, is already being challenged in Israel's Supreme Court over its discriminatory nature. Rights groups and the Palestinian Prisoners Society warn that death is already a risk for Palestinians in Israeli detention, with at least 89 Palestinian prisoners having died in Israeli jails since October 2023, mostly due to torture, deprivation of food, and denial of medical treatment. Palestinians are tried in Israeli military courts where the conviction rate exceeds 96 percent, and confessions are often obtained under extreme pressure or torture. The law does not apply to Jewish Israelis, even those accused of terrorism, with Israeli courts recently dismissing a case against prison guards accused of raping a Palestinian prisoner despite video evidence.
