Atlantean queen Atlanna flees an arranged marriage and washes up injured on the shore of a lighthouse, where she is found and cared for by lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry. They fall in love and have a son, Arthur, who is born with the unique ability to communicate with marine life. When Atlantean soldiers arrive to take Atlanna back to Atlantis, she is forced to leave her family to protect them. Years later, Arthur is a reluctant hero, using his abilities for small rescues but rejecting his Atlantean heritage. Meanwhile, his half-brother, King Orm, the current ruler of Atlantis, plots to unite the seven underwater kingdoms to wage war on the surface world for polluting the oceans. To stop him, Arthur is sought out by Mera, a warrior princess from the kingdom of Xebel, and Vulko, Atlantis' vizier and Arthu secret mentor, who believe Arthur isthe true heir to the throne. To prevent the war and defeat Orm, Arthur and Mera embark on a globe-trotting adventure to find the legendary Trident of Atlan, the first king of Atlantis. It is said that only the true heir can wield the trident and command the mythical Karathen beast, thereby uniting the kingdoms under their rule. Their quest takes them from the Sahara Desert to the depths of the Kingdom of the Trench and finally to the hidden center of the Earth, the lost kingdom of Atlantis. The film culminates in a massive underwater battle between Orm's forces and the armies loyal to Arthur. After a fierce duel, Arthur successfully retrieves the Trident, proves his worth, and commands the Karathen and the armies of the sea.
